Responsibilities

• Cut steel precisely with oxy-acetylene torches or air gouging.
• Fabricate and fit components like plates and beams for bridges.
• Repair cracked stringers, floor beams, and web members using schemes.
• Read blueprints and schematics to get measurements spot on.
• Order materials ahead to keep jobs moving without stops.
• Follow safety rules around heavy gear and moving trains.
• Work outdoors in rain, sun, or snow without complaints.
• Inspect work for quality before calling it done.
• Team up with supervisors and other trades for big projects.
• Document materials used and tasks completed for reports.
• Respond fast to urgent calls for track or bridge fixes.
• Maintain tools like saws and drills to stay sharp.
• Calculate material needs and layouts accurately.
• Adapt to travel 60-70% for site work across the network.
• Pitch in on preventive maintenance to avoid breakdowns.

Requirements

Education

High school diploma or general equivalency. Journeyman welder certification required.

Experience

2-5 years in welding, preferably in commercial or rail maintenance.
