Rail Operator

Responsibilities

  • Link and unlink wagons using shunting techniques.
  • Direct train drivers during coupling and decoupling.
  • Place wagons into sidings for customer pickups.
  • Conduct safety checks on trains before journeys.
  • Communicate via radio for clear team coordination.
  • Work outdoors in all weather, walking and handling heavy items.
  • Follow planned rosters for 24/7 shifts.
  • Report any hazards or equipment issues quick.
  • Team up with small crews for yard operations.
  • Help with basic maintenance or inspections.
  • Keep logs of shunting and safety tasks.
  • Adapt to physical demands like climbing and lifting.
  • Stay alert for moving trains and tracks.
  • Pitch in on training for new operators.
  • Ensure all work meets KiwiRail’s safety standards.
